It’s going to be the biggest Winter Biathlon that Mammoth has ever hosted. During the third week of March, Biathletes and Nordic skiers from around California and the US will descend upon Mammoth Lakes and our Red’s Lake biathlon course. The organizers of this event are looking for a lot of great volunteers.
The activities for volunteers include just about everything and every skill level. We need volunteers for the Stadium Buildout, Race Packet Pickup, Firing Range, Shot counting, and Course Management. Of course, at the end of the event, we need lots of help with Post Race Stadium Takedown. As they say, many hands make light work, and in the past, the Takedown has gone very quickly indeed.
Come and join us! Have a great time volunteering for this very exciting event. Please fill out the form below if you’re interested in helping out with America’s Largest Winter Biathlon. See you there! Kami Boyer can get you on the crew list.
** STADIUM BUILDOUT: Tuesday, March 18
** POST RACE “barn raising” TAKEDOWN: Immediately following event, Sunday, March 23
Note on buildout: The Biathlon stadium backdrop and lead collection system was designed by Cliff Stanton. Boyer Construction has generously volunteered time toward the buildout. To help out, please fill out the form below. Construction crew will meet Tuesday March 18 0800 at Mammoth Mountain Inn. If you can, bring a cordless power drill with star-drive bits. There will be generators on site for charging. Tools can be taken up by snowmachine. Plan on hiking or skiing to the site via chair 11, 12. For non-skiers there will be limited snowmachine transportation. Please bring appropriate clothing. Deli meat, bread and water will be provided for lunch.
On training and race days there will be limited snowmachine transportation available. Please sign up!
In addition to your main race event, on Saturday March 22nd, you’ll be able to participate in a Family Fun Race. Families of all ages and abilities will be invited to race in any manner they like. Here’s Mom’s opportunity to race against her 7 year old Glider. Or Dad and Teen can compete together in a relay type scenario against that other Dad and teen team. Battle it out for bragging rights, or who’s going to wash the car that week.
The Family Fun Race will have the same format as the other Saturday races with a distance of 3km (if you shoot clean!), and a 25m shooting distance. There will be experienced biathletes at each shooting lane to help you shoot. This is a Fun Race. Be creative, dress up. This race will not have a medal award component, but the stakes and the competition might be the most intense of the weekend. Be sure to sign up for this $10 fun race on Active.com when you register.
Kids ages 12-19 also have the option to sign up for the 4.5km race with a 50m shooting distance on Sunday. The fee for this extra race will be an additional $35. Master and Senior Parents be warned, in last year’s event EVERY kid beat their parent!
Please note that in order to participate in the Family Fun Race, at least the child must also be participating in the Youth race. Adults may choose to only race in the Family Fun Race with their child, but we encourage adults to also test their skills in one of the other races.
There will be 2 Live Fire Clinics held for biathlon rifle owners at the Reds Lake Biathlon Venue. Sign up for this clinic is on Active.com with standard clinic fees.
